Free Dr Abu Safiya

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya was a senior paediatrician and the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, which was the last functioning hospital in northern Gaza. He has been arbitrarily detained by Israel since December 2024, abducted after refusing to leave the hundreds of patients and displaced people sheltering in his hospital as it was stormed.
We have now received confirmation, via a letter from his legal team relayed through Physicians for Human Rights Israel, that Dr. Abu Safiya is critically ill and urgently needs hospitalisation.
Medical institutions have the standing, and the history, to act on cases like this. The BMA has taken some steps, including suspending institutional ties with the Israel Medical Association. But what is needed now is a sustained commitment to standing up for health workers and health systems globally — not one-off statements issued once and then left to go quiet. Most institutions with real influence, including the Royal Colleges, the World Medical Association, the ICRC, and the World Health Organization, have yet to speak publicly on his case at all.
This is for everyone to sign — health workers and non-health workers, everywhere in the world. You do not need to work in healthcare to take two minutes and demand that these institutions act.
